My Dell is using XP Pro and if fully updated. Every video I get from my phone is in mp4, but my PowerPoint 2007 doesn't insert my MP4 files. Try turning down your Hardware Acceleration setting, which is found in Control Panel. Then use the Package for CD feature to update the links and bundle the associated files.

If you're using that kind of PC, it's best to use newer media formats like H.264 and Advanced Audio Coding (AAC). When I click on the audio link I get an MCI error.
