The problem was that the journal had become corrupted, and fsck.hfs doesn't know how to actually fix the journal. I could mount it using /System/Library/Filesystems/hfs.fs/hfs.util -m disk0s2 /mnt fixed readonly suid dev (there is also -M to force mounting, I didn't need to) I got a message about the FS My officemate (a linux person) says, well, won't I experience performance degradation on searches with journalling turned off?
